 The word Islam is a statement that says the name comes from the triliteral root slm, and derived from the Arabic grammar aslama, which is intended "to accept, surrender or submission." Thus, Islam means acceptance of and subjection to God, and believers must demonstrate this by worshiping him, following his commands, and avoiding polytheism.
